Here’s What the New Mayor Should Hear

This week I'm back in NYC for the first time in 2025 and although it’s been 23 years since I first made NYC my home and I’m based in Miami now, New York never truly leaves you.
Much has changed politically but I assume nothing much has changed day-to-day. I look forward to meeting friends old and new and take in some of the city's incredible energy. Here are my top unsolicited suggestions for the new mayor:

1) Rethink Transport Costs: Free buses are a nice headline, but we need to reduce the exorbitant fees on yellow cabs, Uber, and Lyft.

2)Incentivize, Don’t Compete: Forget city-run supermarkets. State-run businesses rarely out-perform the private sector. Give tax breaks to the corner delis and existing grocers

3) Retain Talent & Capital: Instead of increasing the burden on corporations and high earners (who already shoulder most of the tax base), create incentives for entrepreneurs to stay. Focus on growth, not redistribution.

4) Trim the Fat: Does NYC really need 36 city employees per 1,000 residents? For context, London operates with ~20, and Miami with only 8.

5) Save the Restaurants: They are the lifeblood of the city’s culture. How about a "tax happy hour" or eliminating tax on tips to help them thrive?
